Introduction
Though the 60s introduced plenty of memorable busty women, it was nevertheless still a fairly conservative time, as models who were not white and slim were unlikely to find work. In contrast, the 70s had been a decade of experimentation, as pornography had become more diverse and girls of all shapes and sizes could more easily find someone willing to shoot them. This ultimately allowed the adult industry to realize that there were plenty of men who just wanted to see how far the female breast tissue could expand, even if the process was aided by surgery or excess body fat. Consequently, the 80s pretty much exploded with chubby and fake-boobed girls, taking the “breast fever” already felt during the previous decades to brand new heights.
Big boobs, generally speaking, became more mainstream at this time, as any man who grew up watching Sabrina Salerno and Samantha Fox can attest to. Busty actresses such as Debora Caprioglio, Angela Aames, Serena Grandi and Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira) also became popular sex symbols during the 80s.
Natural vs Enhanced vs BBW
In the year 2025, when girls barely out of their teens undergo reductions, it might be hard to believe that, half a century ago, plenty of women were willing to risk their lives for the sake of bigger breasts.
Back in the 60s, injectable silicone had gained popularity as topless dancer Carol Doda reached a D-cup after just two months of injections. Sadly, many women who followed suit passed away since the plastic gel would find its way into their arteries and trigger strokes.
Though enhancements became safer during the 80s, the FDA still considered them a class III surgery due to their association with cancer, among other diseases. Nevertheless, implants were quite popular during this decade.
No less a boob man than Russ Meyer supported enhancements, as they made breasts more similar to the beach balls of his fantasies. In fact, several of the women he hired for his 70s productions had fake breasts, including Kitten Natividad.
The busty models of the 80s could be split into mainly three groups:
a) the slim-and-stacked girls reminiscent of the models from the previous decades, who were liked for their natural looks but whose boobs often paled in comparison to those of the chubbier and enhanced models;
b) the BBWs, who gained some popularity during the 70s and often had larger natural boobs than their slimmer colleagues, in spite of their equally bigger guts. Examples include Donna Murray, Stephanie Ebert and Francine Windsor;
c) the surgically-enhanced, who often managed to be both busty and thin, though many men disliked how their boobs looked. Examples include Teri Weigel, Lotta Topp and Janice Lindemulder.
According to “The Big Book of Breasts”, there were about as many men who supported the inclusion of fake-boobed models in magazines as there were those who opposed it. Thus, catering to either group resulted in a virtually identical number of sales.
Though implants seem to be less popular nowadays, they were a must for models who wanted to work during the 90s and felt cheated by Mother Nature. There were even cases of women who got enhanced even though they were already fairly busty, such as Veronika Zemanova.
Page Three, Playboy and Men’s Magazines
Though it already existed in the 70s, the British tabloid Page Three became especially popular during the 80s for introducing some of the most gorgeous models of that time.
Taking a page out of Harrison Marks’ book, Scottish photographer Donald Milne searched the streets of London for some of the best-looking girls he could find. It was him who first shot Samantha Fox and Joanne Latham, both of whom would go on to become sex symbols of the 80s.
Page Three also courted controversy, as both conservative and feminist groups tried to have it banned for indecency and objectification of women. Nevertheless, the tabloid existed for many years, as its website was only taken down in 2018.
Many models who first posed for Page Three would model later for Penthouse and lesser-known lad mags. Examples include Maria Whittaker, Pauline Hickey, Donna Ewin and Tracy Neve.
Gent and Fling also began to capitalize on women’s prettiest charms. Though these mags had started out fairly tame during the 50s and 60s, they began drawing men’s attention by invariably featuring a busty model on their newer covers. Plus, while there had been older magazines, such as Marks’ Kamera and QT, that showcased topless women, the girls from 80s publications were usually much more massive (if not always as natural as their colleagues from twenty years before).
As for Playboy, the 80s were certainly a great decade for the magazine, as it managed to shoot some of the most awe-inspiring models in boob history. These included Gig Gangel, Karen Price, Cathy Larmouth, Heidi Sorenson, Patricia Farinelli, Kimberly McArthur, Charlotte Kemp, Alana Soares, Justine Greiner, Roberta Vasquez, Cher Butler, Donna Edmondson and Petra Verkaik.
